Breastfeeding transgender dad’s surgery story
A Canadian who became a woman after male breast reduction surgery and a host of other procedures has successfully breastfed her child.
Trevor MacDonald, a female-to-male transgender man from Winnipeg, was afraid he wouldn’t be able to breastfeed following his breast reduction surgery, so when he became pregnant he stopped taking the hormone treatments which he’d begun years before.
When Trevor gave birth to the child he immediately began trying to nurse and found he was still able to do so, albeit only in small amounts.
Now Trevor supplements his own breast milk with donated milk, which he feeds to his child via a feeding tube which means they can still nurse at his chest.
Trevor and his partner Ian had their child in 2012 and the pair are outspoken advocates for transgender people becoming parents.
“We did struggle at first,” he said, “but discovering that I could breastfeed made things easier.
“Having a child has been amazing and now we’re going to have another.”
