US Men Account for 40% of All Breast Reductions in The States
The American Society for Plastic Surgeons recently revealed that male breast reductions now account for in excess of 40% of all breast reduction surgeries throughout the United States.
Males in the US underwent almost 27,500 of the total reported 68,106 procedures in 2015. In the last fifteen years, procedures have increased overall by 110% between males and females, respectively.
The surgery is a procedure that is centred around what plastic surgeons refer to as gynecomastia. This is the swelling of the breast tissue in both boys and/or men, as a result of an imbalance of the hormones oestrogen and testosterone.
More recently, male breast reduction has been linked to being overweight or losing a lot of weight. It can also be a result of hormonal changes, or a side effect of medicines that interfere with testosterone levels, such as steroids.
Doctors predominantly concur that gynecomastia is purely a cosmetic issue, with little to no physical complications, suggesting the rise in male breast reduction surgeries are down to appearance and image instead of anything else. This is something that those living with gynecomastia might disagree with.
