Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed on women. The size and firmness of the breast is very important for one’s self-confidence. This procedure is ideal for those who have not developed their desired breast size and for those who have perhaps lost breast tissue after breast feeding or weight loss.

Breast Surgery Kent

 

The usual practice is to increase the breast to the desired size by inserting an implant either behind or in front of the pectoris muscle in the chest and different surgeons have different surgical approaches. I have developed a technique, published in the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Journal in the USA, which places the implant both above and below the muscle in the breast.

The breast is uniquely shaped – it is flatter on the top and rounded at the bottom. If you put the implant totally behind the muscle this will affect the shape you can achieve because the muscle is completely flat. So it will pump out the breast rather than fill out the rounded bottom part of the breast.

By putting the implant behind the muscle it is in a separate compartment that is not directly communicating with the breast tissue compartment.

The half and half technique means that in the top part of the breast where the muscle is merging with the flesh you can create lift by placing the implant behind the muscle and in the lower part the implant is placed in front of the muscle and then fills out the breast tissue directly for a more natural shape. An optimal natural shape is achieved in the lower part of the breast because you are not restricted by the shape given by the flat pectoralis muscle.

The muscle is composed of long fibres from the centre of the breast to the arm and I split it along the direction of the fibres. This is how the implant can remain behind the muscle in the upper part of the breast and at the same time sit in front of the muscle in the lower rounded part of the breast, directly behind the breast tissue.

This technique also has the capacity to adapt to normal breast changes that take place in everyone. Routine body weight, body fat and breast changes – especially seen after pregnancy – are tolerated better to give the breasts a natural shape for a longer period of time. I do all my breast augmentation procedures using this technique where the implant is placed through the breast crease and is partly covered by the muscle.

The recovery time is also much quicker because I’m going through the fleshy part of the muscle.

A straight implant under the muscle means that you have to remove the muscle from the ribs which results in more bleeding and the need for drains. It is also much more painful doing it this way and movement is restricted for four to six weeks. By not detaching the muscle from the ribs most of the patients are able to perform routine activities within a week and exercises and jobs that involve heavy work or lifting are left just a little longer.

 

No rippling, No lateral displacement, No double-bubble deformity, or No muscle contraction-associated deformities have been seen with this new procedure.

The prosthesis is also adequately covered by the upper part of the pectoralis muscle so you are not left with an obvious implant which sometime occurs when the implant is placed above the muscle.

Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

Summer is a time for getting out of the house and getting together with friends and family at the beach and in the parks. However for many the thought of mingling in close proximity to others, in the high temperatures we are expecting this summer, can cause anxiety, social, psychological and occupational problems due to a condition called hyperhidrosis.

Sufferers find themselves victim to excessive sweating sometimes from morning till night and the embarrassment caused can make the individual self-conscious and anxious about being in close proximity to others and often results in reclusive behaviour.

Broken thread veins are extremely common and often embarrassing, mostly affecting the face, body and legs. We don’t know the exact causes of thread veins but they may be caused by changes in temperature, smoking, hormonal changes, alcohol and prolonged standing as well as being a possible inherited condition. What we do know is that everyone would prefer smooth unblemished skin.

Sclerotherapy is effective in removing broken thread veins and is a relatively simple non-surgical procedure involving the injection of a solution into the vein. Over a course of treatments the vein perishes until it disappears completely. The number of treatments varies depending on how many areas need to be treated, which your surgeon will discuss this with you during your consultation.

Laser treatments are also an option for the removal of very fine and large thread veins and works by generating heat in the vein that causes the vessel wall to collapse and over time is broken down and absorbed by the body.

Mole Removal

Hyphertrophic scar revision / Scar repair

Scarring is determined by a number of factors like wound size and depth; age and skin characteristics as well as colour can also affect the appearance of scars. We can have scars from chickenpox or acne and they can be embarrassing, cause anxiety and can make us feel self-conscious. Although no scar can be removed completely there are things that can be done to reduce there prominence and fade them.

The treatment that you need is determined by the type of scar you have. Is it raised or depressed, big or small, where is it and what do you want out of your scar revision. Some people are just looking to reduce the appearance where others have a scar that actually restrict physical movement.
Chemical peels can be used to remove the top layer of the affected area and remove its damaged outer layers. Most suitable for acne scarring this procedure smoothes and improves the texture of facial skin.
Dermabrasion removes the top layer of skin with a spinning wire brush or razor, there is often bleeding and an ointment and bandage will be required during the recovery period.

Liposuction / Fat Removal

The aim of liposuction is to re-contour your body to produce a more proportioned and often aesthetically enhanced shape. The technique of liposuction has many applications and the range of procedures is available to both men and women. Women most frequently request liposuction to the hips, thighs and stomach. The most common area for men is the chest ‘Gynaecomastia’ and sides of the waist ‘love handles’.

The effect of the surgery should be permanent in the treated areas. However, although the fat cells that have been aspirated do not regenerate, a small percentage of these cells are left under the skin and muscle and will continue to store fat if excessive weight is regained.

Performed under anaesthetic, liposuction is the removal of fat cells. When we gain weight we do not grow more fat cells. ‘Getting fatter’ simply means that our existing fat cells have become swollen. Liposuction removes fat cells permanently and they are not replaced. A hollow metal tube is inserted through small incisions in the skin, which breaks up the fat cells that are then removed with a vacuum pump or syringe.

On the morning of your first appointment following your liposuction procedure you will need to have a bath and remove the white dressing. Your stitches will be removed at The Belvedere Clinic. Following this appointment your dressing and pressure garment should be kept on and in place for 7 days. You will then be able to shower but not bath until skin is healed. Pectoral Implants

Pectoral implants can help build self-confidence in individuals who were once embarrassed by their appearance. Pectoral implants are designed to define, firm and shape the male chest. Some men are unable to achieve desired results through exercise alone and the surgery can give existing muscles a toned, more enhanced look. For patients who have underdeveloped chest muscles as result of a medical defect or injury, the pectoral implant procedure can often reproduce a natural, even and symmetrical chest area.

Pectoral implants are different to female breast implants as they have a flatter profile and are designed to be firm in texture. The procedure is performed by creating an incision hidden in the armpit through which the implant is inserted underneath the existing muscles. Alcohol and aspirin should be avoided for the first 3 weeks following the procedure and you should not use sunbeds or expose your breasts to direct sunlight 2 months following surgery. Male Breast Reduction

48 hours after your breast reduction procedure you can bath below the waist. Dressing should be left intact and dry for 2 weeks and then removed without getting wet. Nose Reshaping (Rhinoplasty)

As the focal point of the face, a problem with the nose is often a major problem for an individuals self-esteem and confidence. A crooked or disproportionate nose can distort the proportions of the whole face. After your Rhinoplasty procedure you will have a plaster of paris (POP) over your nose, which will be removed about 10 days after but must be kept dry at all times prior to removal. 4 weeks after the POP has been removed massage the nose gently, working with finger tips from the nasal tip upwards. You can clean the nostrils gently with cotton buds soaked in warm saline after 10 days and should avoid sneezing, coughing or anything that may increase pressure around the nose. Ear Correction

For a long time both adults and children have been affected by over protruding ears. Self-image is often affected and leads many to hide their ears behind hair. It is one of the oldest and most common surgical procedures and can make massive improvements to a persons self-confidence.

An incision is placed at the back of the ear flap then the cartilage is weakened and reformed into a new flatter shape. The ears are the stitched in the new position with the incision marks hidden in the natural fold behind the ear.

A week after your ear correction procedure you will need to return to have your head bandage removed. You should not do this yourself nor let a GP or anyone else do it unless urgent. After the bandage has been removed you will be able to wash your hair but will still need to wear a head band/bandage at night for a further 3 weeks.
